Day 7 of my To-The-Woods STEMersion

Today we wrote poems about writing "recipes" of how to make ponds, lakes, rivers, etc. We had to fill out these worksheets about how we would structure our poems, what we included as ingredients, etc.

My Poem:

Pond Recipe:

To make a pond

It takes 40,000 gallons of water (keep the acidity light),

100 lbs. of algae,

150 bluegills, bass,

And maybe a few carps.

300 grass plants and lily pads if cattails are few.

Take the 40,000 gallons of water with fair amounts of bacteria.

Pour into bowl about 250ft in diameter, (make sure to pre-grease with mud.)

Mix well with algae until you see bubbles at the surface.

Next, Pour the fish in, (make sure not to put in too much bass or it’ll thin the rest out)

Cook thoroughly in a summer’s heat for 1-2 months at an average of 85 degrees F

Until banks are visible,

Now you’re ready for plants when a shore/bed is exposed.

Add in grasses and cattails randomly around the edges,

Let sit until fully grown.

If you want, throw in some lily pads for presentation

Add a sprinkle of tadpoles, or even adult frogs for garnish.

Cut accordingly and serve with some canoes, fishing trips, and cannon balls.

At around 9 am, we headed out to go kayaking! We rode over to the kayak rental place, then got on another bus to go to the launch point at the Narrows since the rental place would be where we finished. I was one of the first ones in the water, it was my first time kayaking and I immediately think it's much easier than canoeing. I thought for sure that I was going to tip, but I got the hang of it pretty quick.

I didn't see any fish, but there were plenty of seeds falling in my kayak. I also saw 3 different turtles. A bit down the river, we had just gone through some rapids, but 2 of the seniors leading us were concerned that we couldn't see our classmates and that we might've gone too far. So they made us get out and drag our kayaks back through the rapids and onto the beach nearby.

As it turns out, we weren't even halfway done. The others were just farther behind us. The good news was that everyone was stopping at the beach and getting in the water. Since I was already soaked up to my waist, I just hopped in too.

We continued downstream for another 2 and a half hours. I ended up getting blisters on both of my thumbs, but I got one hell of a workout! When we got to the end, we docked at the rental place, and had lunch before we got on the bus and headed back.

Some people wanted to do yoga, but seeing as the gym was already the coldest room in the whole school, and we were all soaked, we decided as a group that we weren't going to do it. But that gave us plenty of time to write our blogs though; so I think everything worked out nice.
