Day 6 of my To-The-Woods STEMersion

Today we went and walked to Delco Park. It has volleyball courts, a large pond, and a large grassy area with a shelter and playground. There were a lot of new ducklings and baby geese out on the water with their parents, and they were so cute! Aside from ducks, many geese had their young along the shoreline and were eating in the grasses and algae.

We talked with these authors/artists about these things called Metots. The Metots are these drawings of a combination of three different animals. One of them was this thing called "Finny" that was a cross of a dolphin, a hummingbird, and a horse. Another was one called "Rabecca" that was a cross of a rabbit, a dog, and a (hairless) cat. They then gave us these worksheets where we picked three words to describe ourselves, next, pick three animals that matched each of those words, and draw our own Metot.

My Metot: The Wowlacorn

My Metot was a combination of an owl, a wolf, and a unicorn. I gave it the back end and hind legs of the unicorn, the front and front legs of the wolf (with talons instead of claws), and the wings of an owl. The head has a horse-like neck with a wolf-looking head, it has a rainbow maine and horn on top of the head. The wings are also rainbow colored on the bottom with camouflage on the top.

On the back of the worksheet, we had to write down specific info like its habitat, food source/prey, defence mechanism, preditors, how it takes care of its young, average height/lifespan, and any symbiotic relationships it has with other lifeforms.

My Wowlacorn lives in woodland and meadow-y areas in the mountains. It's back end horse-legs give it extra support as it climbs higher on rough surfaces; it's claws/talons allow it to climb trees and latch onto the sides of cliffs. It's wings can carry it hundreds of feet in the air and it's enhanced hearing, sight, and smell helps it to sniff out prey from above the clouds.

They'll make nesting areas on the ground hidden under large trees, and will bring food to their newborn until they're about one year old. It's young will hunt beside them as scouts until they're about four, then they will leave to find their own territory. The Wowlacorns are omnivores, they will eat a variety of grasses, berries, fruits, and smaller mammals.

They have a special symbiotic relationship with small birds. They birds will nest in their maines and in return will help clean parasites and bugs off the Wowlacorn. The Wowlacorn also protects the small birds from much larger birds and mammals.

As large as this animal is, another creature, the Griffin, like to eat their young and snatch their eggs. The Wowlacorn though, not only has retractable talons, but thei horns are also barbed. The Wowlacorn will reach a lifespan of 50+ years and grows about 6,6' )not including the horn length).

That's just a summary. ;)
